Nonlinear response functions for birefringence and dichroism measurements in condensed phases

چکیده
The fourth-rank tensorial nonlinear response function which controls the response of a chromophore in the condensed phase to three arbitrarily polarized external fields is calculated. Internal (vibrational and rotational) degrees of freedom are incorporated using wave packets in Liouville space (the doorway/window picture). The rotational contribution of the chromophore is expressed in terms of a conditional probability for the rotational diffusion model. We apply this formalism to transient dichroism and birefringence spectroscopies.

Viscoelastic Properties and Orientation of Polymers in Solution
Using rheological shear and oscillation measurements, it is possible to determine the viscoelastic properties of a system quantitatively, as a function of the many influential parameters. The aim here was to establish structure-property relationships for a polymer in a solvent system from the viscoelastic material functions correlated with data from polymer analysis These structure-property rel...
متن کاملPolarization control of ultrashort mid-IR laser pulses for transient vibrational circular dichroism measurements.
Linear dichroism and birefringence artifacts are a major source of concern in transient circular dichroism measurements. They mainly arise from interaction of an imperfectly circular polarized probe beam with a nonisotropic sample. We present in this article a procedure to generate mid-IR pulses of highly symmetric left and right handed circular or elliptical polarization states for transient V...
متن کاملExtraction of Effective Parameters of Anisotropic and Turbid Media Using Mueller Matrix Method
Methods for accurately determining the optical properties of opto-electric materials or bio-samples are essential in facilitating the development of advanced inspection and/or diagnostic applications [1]. For example, linear birefringence (LB) measurements provide a useful insight into the characteristics of LCD compensator films or the photo-elasticity of human tissue, while circular birefring...
متن کاملModified Z-scan techniques for investigations of nonlinear chiroptical effects.
We present simple modifications of the classic Z-scan technique for the investigations of nonlinear chiroptical effects, i.e. nonlinear circular birefringence and two-photon circular dichroism. Two methods for studying these effects: a "polarimetric Z-scan" and a "polarization modulated Zscan" are described in detail. These techniques were applied to estimate the order of magnitude of the effec...
متن کاملA complex-polarization-propagator protocol for magneto-chiral axial dichroism and birefringence dispersion.
A computational protocol for magneto-chiral dichroism and magneto-chiral birefringence dispersion is presented within the framework of damped response theory, also known as complex polarization propagator theory, at the level of time-dependent Hartree-Fock and time-dependent density functional theory. Magneto-chiral dichroism and magneto-chiral birefringence spectra in the (resonant) frequency ...
